Yucatan Center for Scientific Research

The Yucatan Center for Scientific Research (Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán A.C., or CICY) was founded in 1979. It is a public research institution coordinated by the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT). CICY´s mission is to generate scientific and technological knowledge in the areas of plant biochemistry and molecular biology, agricultural biotechnology, natural resources, materials science, water sciences, and renewable energy in order to contribute to sustainable development.

Biotechnology is a scientific discipline basic for the country’s development and relevant throughout the world. Cicy’s Biotechnology Unit carries out research projects that are both creative and innovative, directed at manipulating and using living beings in order to produce goods and services relevant to Mexican society, to protect the environment...

Materials Unit

The Materials Unit is dedicated to the study and development of new materials, as well as the development of techniques for materials processing and recycling. Highlighted projects include the development and aplication of composite materials as lightweight building materials with increased resistence to fatigue and corrosion; the study of...

Natural Resources Unit

To contribute to the conservation and sustainable management and rational exploitation of Mesoamerican natural resources with particular emphasis in those of the Yucatan Peninsula. To develop scientific research, specialized biological collections, and models and suitable technologies for the sustainable management of natural resources...

Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Unit

The Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Unit specializes in basic research to generate knowledge and develop new methodologies in the areas of genetics, cellular biology, biochemistry, and physiology of plants of agroindustrial interest or native to the Yucatan Península. Henequen, Catharanthus roseus, cocoa, marigold, annatto and coffee are...

Renewable Energy Unit

The Renewable Energy Unit is dedicated to the scientific research and development of renewable energies, with current research interests focusing in bioenergy and hydrogen technology, in order to promote the implementation of renewable energy in the region. We offer a Master’s and Doctorate Program in Renewable Energy and participate...

Water Science Unit

The water Science Unit undertakes research on the water resources Peninsula water resources, with emphasis on underground water bodies, assessing them in terms of their quantity and quality, thereby contributing to their responsible management and sustainable use. Two are the main questions addressed: How many water is available?, and What is...

Our Graduate Studies program comprises both M.S. and a Ph.D. programs in our fields of research interests.

CICY is also highly committed to outreach activities, often in collaboration with other national or foreign academic institutions or through interactions with organizations form the private or social sectors.

CICY has built up a significant human and physical infrastructure to generate new knowledge and to provide solutions, improvements, and new technologies in its key research areas. Its main programs are carried out at four research Units located in Mérida,Yucatán and one research Unit in Cancún, Quintana Roo. Water Science Unit
